When my worthy rival for election announced that he wanted "to bring development back to the city" I thought that by way of contributing to the discussion I should point out that we already have several projects under way, in the face of a two year backlog of unsold real estate inventory.

Accordingly, I asked the clerk's office for a list of approved and pending projects that had required commission action. I expected there to be two or three approved and one or two pending.

There were 848 approved projects and another 36 pending! This includes 10 or 12 high rise projects downtown, according to Commissioner Terry Turner. How much development do you want?

Is there any wonder that the traffic pollution is at an all time high? And yet unemployment is out of control as well? I thought "development" created jobs?

Sure, development creates jobs - in China where the building materials come from. Also, out of state and out of country migrant laborers come to work on the projects. Did you know that we "can't" restrict Sarasota projects to local labor unless we fund them ourselves? Well, evidently we can't.

This needs a long, long look.
