Well, they were, anyway. If you would like to be a Police Officer, they still are. When they were hiring they found that they had to pay people more to live in the city, because the cost of living is higher. Trouble was, people had to live somewhere before they were hired - and they couldn't afford Sarasota. Not that there aren't places to live in Sarasota that are cost effective, it is just that places like that are not often vacant. So for someone to relocate to Sarasota and then apply to work for the Sarasota City Government, it didn't happen often enough to support a local hire only policy. We might be able to try it now, if we actually had any openings. |
